Characters: John, Kathy, Lynda, Pat, Sean, Sid, Tony
- The Hassett Room mark II is ready for its Grand Opening next Wednesday but Sid is obviously happier about it that Kathy who still hasn’t completely resigned herself to the move down market.
- Sid is still very bitter about the cricket, blaming Sean for the last weekend’s defeat with comments like putting “his own kind first” and “how can a man like that be part of the community?”
- Lynda needs young men. For the play, naturally. She’s currently got Larry as Theseus, but is after a younger man for the role, John or Tommy perhaps?
- Tony’s not angry at Pat any more, he’s moved into despair, and she’s not much better, blaming herself for their situation. Tony’s not though, reasoning that if this mystery consortium wanted the land they’d have lost the bidding anyway. It’s them against the world now!
- Sean tears John off a strip for the manner of their losing, which John takes reasonably well. He mentions in passing that Sid wasn’t happy with the state of the club. Sean decides that they’ll have post-nets drinks in The Bull tonight ……
- It’s full scale war in the Ploughmans Bar. Sean confronts Sid who makes no attempt to disguise his dislike of Sean’s way of life. Harsh words are exchanged and a nadir is reached with Sid’s comments about being able to “talk young men round”, which, unsurprisingly, John doesn’t take very well at all. Sean asks why Sid, a man with a thriving business, a great wife and son should feel so threatened by him. An apologetic Kathy and a furious John sound as though they couldn’t care less.
