Characters: Betty, George, Greg, Marjorie, Mike, Neil, Susan
- Neil and Susan are still at loggerheads. She’s been through the appointments section of the paper, marking possible jobs – he’s quick to notice that they’re all office jobs. She’s annoyed that he’s still not had a word with Emma.
- Greg’s still being a little ray of sunshine: he doesn’t want to sit and have a pint with Neil and Tony; he tells Marjorie to use a lead when walking “the gels” on Home Farm land (something she would do without being told, it was the way he told her); and then when George tries to tell him to civil to William, he rebuts in no uncertain terms.
- Susan’s crying on Betty’s shoulder over Neil, complaining that he seems to not realise the effects on his family that the loss of income will have. After she leaves Mike’s behind Neil as he remarks that she’s forgotten that Neil’s job wasn’t always made so well and that maybe she’s objecting to not having a suit for a husband.
- When Neil returns from lending George a hand with a fence, he walks right into a warzone: Susan’s told Emma she can’t go on the school trip and Neil’s furious. Susan’s unrepentant and she’s mentally writing him off as she tells him that she’s the main earner in the family now.
