Characters: Brian, Caroline, Debbie, Eddie, James Miller, Joe, Kathy, Simon
- Brian’s patched things up with Sammy over the ewes even to the extent of offering Debbie a bonus if there’s an improvement over last year. She reminds him about her afternoon off – but doesn’t say it’s to be with Simon.
- Caroline’s in the Bull meeting a mystery someone (a dwarf in a toupee according to Debbie) but things peter out and he leaves before dessert.
- The bank have approved the Grundy’s budget and James Miller is pleased. He’s also impressed with the cows, Joe’s very depressed about it all, but James is confident – because he’s also gone over Simon’s financial statement and thinks they’ve some footholds. They consider his land valuations far too low and this could allow them to question his credibility with the land-owning members of the tribunal, or as Joe put it, he’s a “born crook and a liar”.
- Kathy and Caroline are discussing The Bull, it’s finances and its place in the world. Although Kathy’s fairly happy, Caroline is obviously playing the slightly concerned (part-)owner and, in a very friendly way, asks for a more detailed meeting.
- Debbie and Simon are also dining in the Hassett Room (and are spotted by Caroline and Kathy and in turn noticed Caroline’s dining partner). She thinks that it was down to him that she stood up to Sammy, that she though that he would not have backed down. They are still playing word games as he seeks a continuation of discussions at his place, which could take all afternoon. She says that she has all evening too – and if it got late she might as well stay the night …..
