  • Why is Rob able to visit Helen in the shop? Charlie is away for the day. He is hoping to take Helen out for lunch but first she has a problem to sort out.
  • Peggy enjoys teasing Lilian about the mess she has made knitting a matinee jacket but she comes to her rescue by offering to knit something herself; she would be glad to help. Of course it will be their secret; that will wipe the smile off Lynda’s face.
  • At the cereal show, Charlie is having a ball; he loves all this machinery, Adam insists that machines won’t solve everything.
  • Over lunch Rob and Helen peruse The Echo. Oh dear, Charlie won’t be happy with this: Brookfield is portrayed as a rustic idyll and on the opposite page is a picture of Berrow Farm’s dead calf. Rob doesn’t mind: he didn’t like the PR idea in the first place.
  • As Peggy entertains Lilian to lunch, they too peruse The Echo. It’s a disgrace; Jack would never have allowed such a picture in his time in charge of the paper.
  • Lunch at the cereal show gives Charlie an opportunity to convince Adam that only the most efficient will survive. He thinks Adam is not ambitious enough; his equipment is under-utilised; he could be servicing half the county. Has Adam seen The Echo? Neither of them has but Charlie is content to defer that pleasure. Little does he know!
