  • Jill calls at Lower Loxley with some sad news; John Tregorran is dead. They are interrupted by Roy, who wants to check out a radio Borsetshire interview with Elizabeth. Jill asks if Freddie is all right; he just grunted when she arrived and went to his room. According to Lily he has been like it all weekend. When Roy presses the matter of the interview, Elizabeth is very short with him and rushes off.
  • Neil is off to see Tony to sort out details of his new job, but first he has to endure another tirade from Susan about being taken for granted. She claims that Pat deliberately ignored her this morning, so Neil must be very firm with Tony. Neil endeavours to explain that he has already spoken to Tony, but Susan is just not listening.
  • Jill tells Peggy about John Tregorran, but Peggy seems distracted. First she is worried about her cat eating clematis, then she says she must buy Jack a birthday card. Jill tries to calm her down, saying they can buy a card at the shop.
  • Neil rings Susan with some good news; he is to be herd manager for the pigs with 50% of the profits. Even if Tom should come back, Neil’s position will not be compromised. Susan is overjoyed, and insists Neil must have new overalls as befits his new management status. He must believe in himself now. If you like, says Neil wearily.
  • Elizabeth explains to Freddie that what he saw was just Roy cheering her up. But she sharply reminds Roy that nothing is to happen that could be misconstrued. Apparently this extends to doing a Radio Borsetshire interview with him. Perhaps Hayley could do it instead of her.
  • As Peggy buys a card, Susan holds forth about the Tregorrans and the rumours about their marriage – particularly the rumours about John and Jennifer. Jill attempts to quell the gossip, but in vain. Then Susan announces that Neil is to manage the pigs at Bridge Farm. A distressed Peggy has to go and wait outside.
