More good neighbourly actions: Adam brings straw for Brookfield and Lilian offers a house to Lynda.

Characters: Adam, David, Fallon, Lilian, Lynda, Ruth- Still no sign of Scruff; Lynda is desperately scouring the countryside.
- Pip is back at University; it will do her good to get away from the farm. The next problem is a lack of straw; David has had no luck finding any. Worry not; their fairy godmother, in the shape of Adam, turns up with several bales. Adam saw David’s appearance on local TV, though David thinks Adam was the big hero.
- The cellar in The Bull is still a disaster zone; everything down there is a write-off. In the bar they are doing what they can but the kitchen needs a complete refit. They won’t be open any time soon though Fallon is keen restore some sort of service; the pub is the heart of the village. Lynda puts up a poster in the pub about Scruff; Lilian, who is helping with the clear-up, asks about the state of Ambridge Hall: the downstairs is ruined and the septic tank is not working properly. Lilian suggests putting Scruff’s bed in the tool shed, in case he comes back. Then they could move out and she offers the empty Dower House; her offer is gratefully accepted.
- David has been thinking about the lack of help by the authorities; it’s time for action. Ruth will go along with that and she assures David that she understands why he could not leave. She doesn’t want to be anywhere else either; it’s their home.
