Bill comes to a sad end but his sacrifice aids Lynda’s scheme to reduce traffic speeds in the village.
Radio Times: Peggy has to make a tough decision, and Brian has a sudden realisation.
Characters: Anisha, Brian, Jennifer, Lilian, Lynda, Peggy- Lilian complains about Miranda who is contesting every detail of the divorce. Jennifer opines that Justin seems to thrive on the challenge but Lilian is worried about the stress having an effect on his health. Jennifer suggests that Lilian take up gardening but Lilian isn’t convinced. The discussion turns to Matt; why has he turned up again? Brian complains that Justin has asked him at the last moment to present one of his pet projects to the board. This isn’t like Justin, observes Lilian.
- Lynda shows up at Peggy’s with the terrible news that Bill has been very badly hurt by a car. Anisha gives him a powerful pain killer but the x ray shows extensive injuries. Peggy asks Anisha to be honest. She suggests that the pain he would go through would be extensive. It would be the humane thing to put Bill down.
- Christine is very upset about losing Bill but this seems only to annoy Peggy. He wasn’t even her cat, she exclaims. When Lilian and Jennifer arrive, they express worry for Peggy’s emotional state. Peggy dismisses their concerns by saying that Bill lived to a good age and had a happy life. She has decided to bury Bill in the garden. Lilian goes with her to choose the spot. Inside, Lynda uses the sad situation to talk about the speed watch programme. There are very few volunteers but next time, it could be a person who is hit.
- Jennifer tells Brian that Bill was killed by a hit and run driver. Brian is shocked and confesses that he believes it was him. He wasn’t paying attention and when he looked in his mirror, he thought it was a bunch of old clothes. Brian goes to confess to Peggy. Peggy chastises him for going too fast and for not stopping. What can Brian do to make it up? How about a charitable donation or another kitten? It is too early for that, Peggy replies tartly. Jennifer announces there is someone else Brian must go to see.
- Brian approaches Lynda and announces that he wishes to volunteer for the speed watch. He drops Jennifer, Lilian and Kate in it as well. He neglects to confess that he was the culprit but accepts all Lynda’s praise and gratitude, especially as his time is so valuable. Lynda speaks with scorn about the guilty culprit who left poor Bill by the side of the road but Brian stays silent. Well, concludes Lynda, if Bill’s passing ensures that the village will be safer, then his passing will not have been in vain.
