  • Ursula’s lattice treacle tart must be cooked to perfection for Bruce and Rob is irritated with her pandering to him. She is like a cat on hot coals, belying an uneasiness in the relationship.
  • Bert has cooked breakfast for Rex on his 29th birthday. Toby has covered the early shift to ensure Rex has a lie in. As Rex takes stock of his life, Bert cheers him up with a poem he’s written for Rex and reminds him he has much to be grateful for. They agree to share a pint later on. Toby and Pip are also in the pub to toast Rex’s birthday. Bert has since added to the poem which he proudly recites for all to hear. An awkward moment comes in the final verse which alludes to Rex meeting a girl and settling down. Toby digs deep for the drinks, while asking Rex for some change for the machine in the gents’ toilets. An unsuspecting Rex coughs up.
  • Bruce complains about the journey, being in Ambridge itself and the fact that he now has indigestion. He complains about Ursula’s meal he’s just eaten and the convenience food he has been living on for the past months at home. Bruce makes it clear that Ursula’s job is to look after him and today he will take her back with him. As Ursula tries to negotiate more time to stay in Ambridge, they agree that after Rob’s appointment on Thursday, she will return for good.
  • As he prepares to leave, Bruce bluntly tells Rob he has no intention of staying to meet Henry. He is not interested and will have nothing to do with Henry due to the circumstances surrounding his conception. He will, however, return for Helen’s trial and to claim his grandson, Rob’s son, and take him from behind bars, where Helen can rot as far as he is concerned.
