Characters: Bert, Carol, Helen, Lilian, Toby, Tom- Bert manages to talk at the service to mark the 1st year after the flood. The kindness of everyone was his source of strength. He thought he’d never go back to the bungalow on his own but now he has finally gone home.
- Tom goes to visit Helen. She insists they wait for Rob but Tom says it’s not just the rotas he wants to talk about. He wants to know if everything is alright. Helen tells him there is no need to worry. She only cried on Thursday because of her hormones and she is tired with the baby moving so much at night. He continues to press but she says she’s fine. That’s all he wanted to know.
- Carole talks to Toby about the village hall. It is moving on. But Toby is really more interested in her views on pastured eggs. Carole seems rather confused. Then Lilian comes around and he thinks she is a far better target. He pretends to know about horses and end up being forced to go back to The Stables to learn how to groom him. Lilian clearly enjoys teasing him. She has no interest in his eggs. He punts to Lilian the idea of sponsorship of his egg boxes now she’s so well connected. She says if he gets all the figures together, she’ll see what she can do.
- Carole takes Bert a hoe as a housewarming present. She is visiting the farm to see the new cows. He expects he’ll get used to it in time. He admits he was talking to Freda all the time as he was moving into the bungalow. Carole says she expects he’ll always feel like that. At least the garden is looking better than he’d expected. And he almost felt Freda was in the garden with him. He has no doubt that the bungalow is where he belongs.
