Helen’s prospects look grim; Rob’s life apparently hangs by a thread. Scissors anyone?
Radio Times: Kirsty is called to action, while Pat is confused.
Characters: Dr Corby, DS Madeley, Harrison, Helen, Henry, Kirsty, Pat, PC Hunter, Tony- Kirsty arrives at Blossom Hill Cottage, and finds Helen with blood on her sleeve. She asks her distraught friend what happened. “He was shouting at Henry” comes the answer. Satisfied that the boy is safe, Kirsty makes for the kitchen to find Rob. She is shocked by what she finds and shouts at Helen in order to try and quieten her. She approaches Rob and after some moments, makes a discovery. He’s still breathing. Yes! Again she shouts at Helen, who can’t believe that Rob’s alive, to get towels to staunch the bleeding. While she’s away, Kirsty rings for an ambulance.
- Kirsty relays Rob’s condition to the ambulance service on the phone. With sirens sounding, Helen can’t fathom why the police are coming in before the ambulance crew. Harrison arrives and asks Helen to step back. He introduces his colleague, PC Sally Hunter who stays with Helen while he goes into the kitchen. Establishing that the scene is safe, he calls in the paramedics. He gently leads Helen into the living room as Kirsty mentions to PC Hunter that Henry has grandparents living just down the road.
- After what seems like a long and tiring day, Pat and Tony are preparing to turn in for the night. The phone rings. Tony’s heart sinks, but Pat urges him to answer quickly. It could only be Helen. Perhaps the baby’s on the way. Resigned to an even later night, he answers.
- Helen is being checked over by PC Hunter. With Pat and Tony on the way, Harrison suggests that Henry should go with them. Yet more anguish for Helen, but she agrees. A DS Joanne Madeley arrives and takes control. She is updated briefly by Harrison just as the ambulance doctor, Nick Corby, takes her into the kitchen for a word. Rob has a lacerated wrist and stab wounds to the abdomen and chest. He’s had an emergency procedure for a collapsed lung. Whoever did this wasn’t “messing around” he says.
- Helen sobs over and over to Harrison. She couldn’t stand Rob any longer; she didn’t know what else to do. She’s so sorry. “Don’t worry” he replies, “We’ll get to the bottom of it.” Almost immediately, DS Madeley walks in and demands Harrison’s handcuffs. She asks Helen to stretch out her arms and handcuffs her. Helen is arrested on suspicion of wounding and is given a caution. It’s the final straw. Helen goes to pieces.
- Amidst the hubbub and onlookers, Tony and Pat find Peggy who has come to see what the flashing lights were all about. Apparently there’s been a violent incident, Rob’s been hurt. As he’s wheeled out on a stretcher, the seriousness of the event dawns on them. Harrison allows Tony and Pat under the police tape, but Peggy must remain where she is. With Pat demanding to know what’s going on, Harrison eventually gives way. Rob’s been stabbed and Helen’s under arrest. As this news sinks in, PC Hunter brings a confused Henry out. He runs to Pat. In the background, Helen can be heard crying. Kirsty, who is protesting loudly that this can’t be right, is going with the police to “help with enquiries.” In reply to Henry, Pat says that his mummy is going on a little ride and that she is sure she will be back soon. What else could she say?
