  • While she waits for Roy to give her a driving lesson, Phoebe eats a sandwich but is interrupted by Kate who is in her usual right-on mode, complaining about the lack of hummus in Jennifer’s fridge. Kate’s business plans are going well and she wants to discuss a job for Phoebe, who is not minded to show any interest. When Roy arrives, Phoebe rushes off for her lesson.
  • At Heather’s funeral Ruth is doing her little voice. Apparently Ben was in such a state she almost left him at home. Usha offers support and encouragement while Ruth tells Pip how brave she is. When Ruth dissolves in tears, Pip goes to find a very silent David.
  • Roy chats about the ghost walks at Lower Loxley and asks Phoebe if her Oxford application is sorted. Apparently it is far from sorted; Phoebe has had a change of heart since her conversation with Alex. Roy talks good sense; this is something that could influence the whole of her life. Her teachers clearly believe in her and know what they are talking about. If Alex really cares about Phoebe he will support her.
  • Pip reads a poem chosen by Heather in very dramatic fashion with just a hint of tears. It succeeds in reducing breathy little Ruth to more tears and further dramatic outpourings to Usha about having let Heather down and Prudhoe no longer feeling like home. Wisely Usha decides to take Jim home.
  • Kate is determined to involve Phoebe in her business; they could design a job to suit her. If it makes you happy, snarls Phoebe, and she goes off to ring Roy. She has sent in her application and Roy is delighted. Phoebe just hopes Alex feels the same.
