Kenton meets with a refusal. Jim meets with evasion. Susan meets with a hungry man.
Radio Times: Jim is still cleaning up, and Kenton goes a step too far.
Characters: Ed, Jazzer, Jim, Kenton, Lilian, Susan- Taking an early stroll on the green, Kenton encounters Jim, who has been up early demolishing a flood-wrecked sofa. Jim expresses concern over Chris, who has not taken things well. Talk turns to the wake for Freda. Jim felt an appearance at church was enough, so did not go on to Brookfield. He likes Jolene’s idea of planting a rose in Freda’s memory at The Bull, but before the conversation can go any further Jim reaches for his binoculars; he spots some gulls and has heard that some Mediterranean Gulls are with them. Kenton is sworn to secrecy over this, but given his total lack of interest, it does not look as though Kenton will be spreading this particular piece of information far and wide.
- Jim sees Ed on his tractor, and asks some probing questions about the state of estate ditches. Ed is evasive, and claims he has to get to work, so Jim’s speculation about the cause of the flood is not advanced.
- A bad-tempered Susan moans at Jazzer for eating doughnuts in the temporary shop. Kind though Pat is, her idea of breakfast does not equate with Jazzer’s. Fruit, yoghurt and muesli are not enough to keep a milk- and pig-man going all day. It gives Susan the opportunity for a major rant about having Ed and Emma back at Ambridge View. Darkly she informs Jazzer that she has got questions to ask at tomorrow’s meeting.
- Early mornings on a farm do not accord with Lilian’s way of life, and she is in a bad state when Kenton calls to see her. Strong coffee and make-up must come before family. When this is accomplished, she waves aside to Kenton’s apologies about not buying her out at The Bull; she quite understands. Finding his cousin so accommodating, Kenton wastes no time. Maybe Lilian will fund their plans for re-launching the restaurant? Lilian gives it to him straight; she has no money at all and is struggling to survive.
