  • Toby is wakened by Pip. She needs urgent help to recover some cows which have got into Tony’s Angus herd. Having managed to persuade him and the job being done she receives a phone call from Ed who’s found yet more of her cows wandering in the lane. Thanking Ed profusely with the promise of a pint, she insists that Toby help round the second lot up. Having sorted that out, and ignoring Toby’s pleas for breakfast, she sets him on mending the fences that she should have repaired earlier on. Her lapse must remain a secret.
  • Peggy phones a very queasy Lilian to rearrange their meeting for 11 o’clock. As Lilian hangs up she decides to dress for the day and meet it head on, though nothing could be further from her wishes. At Brookfield, Pip catches up with Toby and manages to phone Ed to thank him again and ask him to keep the whole affair of the cows a secret.
  • After the phone call, Ed offers his father a pint at The Bull at lunchtime. He tells Eddie of Kirsty’s meltdown at Bridge Farm. She’s apparently taken some time off from Grey Gables to aid her recovery. He almost manages to let slip that Pip’s story is a secret when their conversation is interrupted by a phone call from Harriet Vane who, much to Eddie’s annoyance wants to know what Ambridge Hall is like as a guest-house.
  • Peggy treats Lilian to a cup of tea but wastes no time in getting to the point of their meeting. She confronts Lilian with some of the stories she has heard about her behaviour with Justin. She asks her point blank if she’s had an affair. Lilian hedges about and uses weasel words. Eventually, Peggy makes it quite clear that she is utterly furious about Lilian having committed adultery. She cares very much that Lilian’s behaviour reflects on her good name. After all, marriage is a sacred bond; relationships are serious and Lilian above all people should know that.
  • At The Bull, Eddie tells Ed that he’s been rather forthright in his response to Harriet Vane. Just at this moment Pip and Toby walk in. Toby insists on his cooked all day breakfast, Pip offers to buy Ed his promised pint. She generously includes Eddie in the round of drinks. After she’s sat down, he asks Ed why he was owed a drink. Fortunately, another text message from Harriet Vane prevents Ed from answering. This time she wants to know if there are any well-tended Gardens in the area which are open to visitors. He decides not to reply. Just then, Lilian walks in complaining that it’s never too late to have been told off by your mother. Absolutely!
