Oliver discovers the awful truth; Justin has Matt clearly in his sights.
Radio Times: Lilian tries to calm the situation
Characters: Clarrie, Eddie, Justin, Lilian, Oliver, Shula- Clarrie tackles Eddie about the latest drama at Grange Farm. The current guests have chipped the spout of Caroline’s jug which was in their bedroom. Eddie has far more on his plate. He has to round up his pigs, get them to the abattoir and pick up some replacement weaners. Clarrie insists that he buys glue to repair the damage while he’s out. In fact, she decides to go with him, to make sure that he gets the right sort.
- While preparing for a hack, Shula confides in Lilian that she’s worried about Oliver’s well being. Lilian wonders where he will stay until the funeral. Shula’s uncertain; he may want to go back to Grange Farm. They’re joined by the man himself. Lilian offers her condolences. He declines their offer of a ride and opts for a good walk to take in some good Borsetshire air. He leaves and they set off, Shula asks if Lilian asks if she’s seen the Council Planning website. She has, and she feels that Matt should remove his drunken ravings before Justin spots them.
- On his walk, Oliver meets Justin with a very talkative Ruby. They speak of Matt’s comments about the proposed pig unit. Justin is not best pleased. He feels that his thoughts are thoroughly unhelpful and he’s not even an official Ambridge resident. Oliver says that he feels as though Caroline is with him on his walk. Justin continues with Ruby, leaving Oliver to head in the direction of Grange Farm.
- While unloading the weaners, Clarrie spots Oliver standing by a gate, holding Caroline’s damaged jug. She goes to offer their condolences and an explanation. Oliver has some questions. Why were there two people in his drawing room? Clarrie has the decency to try and explain but Eddie’s contributions make matters much worse. Oliver suspects, quite rightly, that the “guests” were staying in the master bedroom. Oliver explains that he wanted to return to his home, the one that he had made with Caroline. He felt violated. They had betrayed his trust. Caroline was right after all. They were not trustworthy tenants. All Eddie can do is bluster on about mending the jug. In anguish, Oliver dashes it to the floor…” see if you can mend that” he screams.
- At the Dower House, Justin has had enough of Matt’s interference in his life. His online comments have gone too far. A few phone calls to his friends in Melling Equestrian Investments Ltd should see Matt on his way, especially given his recent performance on the investors day. Lilian is shocked to realise that Justin had anything to do with that debacle and suggests that Justin should reflect on things a little more. He claims that he’s been too patient for too long. He’s not at all jealous of Matt’s previous relationship with Lilian. He simply intends to crush him.
- Oliver returns to The Stables, clearly in a state of shock. Shula asks what’s wrong but he insists that he should go to his room to rest. At Grange Farm, the guests leave. Eddie feels that all must be well with Oliver…he didn’t evict them on the spot after all. Clarrie says that they have no option but to leave, she couldn’t look him in the eye again. Grange Farm wasn’t theirs by right and they didn’t deserve to stay. She had never seen him so angry, ever. Eddie offers to go over in an hour or so and put things right. Clarrie persuades him otherwise. Instead, he plans to mend the jug. He has gathered up the pieces. Clarrie is at the end of her tether. “You just don’t get it do you?” she asks helplessly. “There’s some things so broke, they can never be fixed.”
