Peggy’s birthday plans look promising; the move from Brookfield looks almost like a done deal.

Radio Times: Jennifer has surprising plans, and David confides in Adam.

  • Jenny tells Carol of her mother’s plans to have her birthday party at Bridge Farm. Jenny is compiling a memory book, so any that Carol has would be welcome. She also returns a copy of an Ernest Dowson book which she feels must have been Carols. Yes, it was a gift from John.
  • David and Jill arrive to find an empty Brookfield. Ruth has been left with her mother who has ended up in hospital with a broken wrist. David wanders off to get the latest news from Adam while Jill simply enjoys the peace, quiet and comfort of home.
  • Jenny meets her mother at her hairdressers as arranged. She is pleased that she is having her party at Tony’s. Peggy spots a book that Jenny is carrying, another one of Johns… “Communication with the Other Side”. She is horrified as Jenny rather light-heartedly, threatens to hold a séance of her own.
  • Adam and David are talking about the prospects in Northumberland; the farm is potentially very good, no dairy at present but possessing good grassland. It seems that the children are excited about the prospect of a move, but he agrees that his mother may yet prove to be a tougher nut to crack.
  • Carol, Jill and Peggy have put aside bridge practice in favour of preparing Carols newly harvested sloes for sloe gin making. Conversation turns to the move to Northumbria and how well Ruth and David are accepting it. Carol admits to feeling very vexed that her friend may leave Ambridge just as she moves in.
  • Later, Jenny calls to take Peggy home. Jill tells Carol the Peggy is quite concerned about Jenny’s threat to hold a séance. However, Carol believed that that if, for instance, John were to “return” to haunt anyone, it would be her. Jill laughs and in the distance an owl hoots.
