Rob makes himself unpleasant to all who attend the cricket match but Ian stands up to his bullying

Radio Times: It is a busy day at the cricket, and Ian and Rob come toe to toe.

Characters: , , , , ,
  • Johnny runs up to tell Pat that Kaz is out of danger now; she has lost a lot of blood when she cut herself. Kaz is on a regular prison wing now and may not be allowed back on the mother/child wing because self-harmers are viewed as dangerous to their children. Kaz must be tested before she could go back. Pat laments the difficulties for Helen, first in finding Kaz and now possibly losing her friend. Johnny must hurry out for the cricket match.
  • Ian and Adam are watching the match and trading quips. Alice has left a bottle of champagne as part of her abject apologies. Adam pretends to be unforgiving when Shula comes up with containers full of 4 types of sandwiches. Isn’t Fallon doing the teas? Shula felt that you can never have too much food and hers is just to fill the gaps. Rob wants to talk to Adam about his batting. Alistair will lose the match if something is not done. Are you worried I’ll play too defensively, asks Adam? To be honest is wouldn’t be the first time, is Rob’s answer. With a neutral tone, Adam replies that he’ll keep that in mind. Ian wants to know if Rob is now team coach. Rob tells him to keep to baking his petit fours and stay out of (man’s) work. Ian laughs and wonders that there was ever village cricket before he arrived.
  • Shula pops up to push her sandwiches on Johnny; he asks what kind and when the answer is given, he announces he will wait for Fallon’s at tea time. Pat asks Johnny to care for the pigs when Tom goes on a farm walk hosted by a Nuffield scholar. Ruth is joining Tom, partly to give moral support. Ian comes to join their group and points out Rob who seems to be bullying members of the team. He is strutting around as if he doesn’t have a care in the world. Pat snorts in disgust and Johnny wonders how he can do this with the trial only a week away. Pat talks about Kaz and the system that doesn’t protect vulnerable young women. Try not to worry, comforts Johnny. It’s not just that, says Pat, but it is Rob’s statement which is full of lies and evil statements. He even asserts that Henry is afraid of his mum. Ian wishes he could do something. Maybe he could visit Helen; Pat thinks it’s a great idea.
  • Adam is glum and feels he lost the match. Shula’s way of cheering him up is to offer her sandwiches. No takers here, though, from either Adam or Ian. Rob comes up and Shula hurries away; Rob isn’t good enough for her sandwiches. Johnny and Adam ignore Rob’s calls and say something about meeting Rex at the pub. Ian is temporarily left behind and he tells Rob that is called voting with your feet. Rob holds Ian with a nasty tone and proceeds to give Ian some more advice about not going to court for Helen. I don’t need any advice from you, answers Ian. Are you sure you’re man enough to testify for Helen; you don’t want to break down in tears on the stand, sneers Rob. Ian’s retort angers Rob almost beyond his limit and he threatens Ian. Go ahead and hit me, Ian says. While Rob sputters threats, Ian says he won’t let Helen down.
