Ruth finds Brookfield too quiet. Ed finds that Emma has made plans.

Characters: David, Ed, Emma, Ruth, Susan- As Ed prepares to leave for his vaccination course, Emma is clearly not happy. Ed tries to reassure her about her safety, but Emma is not convinced.
- Ruth returns from Prudhoe, already missing Josh and Ben. David admits that she was right to get them off the farm. Now he can concentrate on the harvest.
- Ed is shocked when George informs him that Emma is taking him and Keira to Susan’s while Ed is away. When he takes this up with Emma, she is cold and unpleasant to him.
- Ruth keeps herself busy and is surprised when Ed calls in to tell her that Emma and the children will be at Susan’s while he is away. After he leaves, Ruth, having sent her own children away, comments that it is like rats leaving a sinking ship.
- Susan is delighted to have her family with her, and prattles on in her usual fashion. Ed tells Emma he will ring each night, but Emma can barely bring herself to reply.
- Ruth is shocked when David tells her he is going to the Borchester Show ‘to keep up appearances’. Ruth points out that now that Susan and several others know, their situation is scarcely a secret. Eventually David agrees not to leave the farm and to tell everyone he is too busy with harvest.
