The happiest day of Kirsty’s life becomes something quite different.
Radio Times: Kirsty is happy riding to church, and Joe gets disgruntled.
Characters: Alan, Eddie, Helen, Joe, Kirsty, Pat, Roy, Tom, Tony- Pat calls Tony to get ready for the great day. Even Tony admits to being excited. Pat has not seen Tom since breakfast time.
- Helen helps Kirsty dress, and thinks she looks beautiful. She is so pleased that her best friend will shortly also be her sister-in-law. Soon they set off in the decorated trap, and in a truly Hardyesque moment, they ride around the village to the accompaniment of a fiddler.
- Roy has arranged a surprise for Tom, but it falls badly flat: they are to travel to church is a vintage Fergie, just like the one that killed John. Roy is mortified when he realises what he has done, but Tom barely seems to notice. Helen rings Tom to tell him she and Kirsty have set out, but again Tom scarcely seems to hear.
- As Kirsty arrives at church, she learns that Tom is with Alan in the vestry. Roy tells her Tom is in a bit of a state. Meanwhile the guests are forced to listen to endless organ music, to Joe and Eddie’s disgust.
- Hesitantly, Tom tells Kirsty he can’t go through with the wedding. He is so sorry. Shocked, Kirsty gabbles on about it all being too much; they can forget the house, maybe build at Bridge Farm; they can get married quietly later on; they can just live together at 1 The Green… no, says Tom, you don’t understand. I can’t go through with this. Realising what Tom is saying, Kirsty reacts angrily. She has loved him for fifteen years. When Tom starts to cry, Kirsty berates him for making her look a fool and breaking her heart. In front of a shocked congregation, Kirsty runs screaming from the church.
