William and the family get through the funeral which is then ruined by a drunken Alice telling Will he shouldn’t blame himself for not noticing Nic was dying.
Radio Times: Alice goes too far. Will attempts a brave face
Characters: Alice, Clarrie, Ed, Eddie, Emma, Joe, William- Will is late to arrive at Grange Farm but he does get there with Poppy. They are meeting Andrew with the other children at the church. Will tries to be brave but when he gets to the church he breaks down. Clarrie tells him she will get him through it. He just has to keep on. And she says he’s not too old to hold his Mum’s hand.
- Emma is petrified about her eulogy but tells, tearfully, a nice story about Nic going on a theme park ride for her kids. She was her friend and it’s not fair she’s gone. After the service, Joe says he enjoyed the service and the poems. But he tells Ed he is still worrying about her last words. The vicar said she was a good person and surely that means without sin. He can’t stop thinking about it. Ed gets quite cross and tells him with all the people there today, how could they possibly think she would have done that. Cowed, Joe agrees but says he’d have swapped with her in a heartbeat. He only has a few years left and she had all her life and the children to think about. Ed tries to cheer him up by going to look at the photos that Emma and Bev have arranged – to think of the real Nic.
- Ed and Emma talk about how things have gone. Brian has confirmed Will’s job and house are safe. Emma also complains that Alice hasn’t turned up. Then she appears and clearly has already had a drink and is aiming for more. She wants to find Will but Emma tries to keep her away from him.
- Alice gets more and more drunk and starts going on, loudly, to Eddie about how awful it is. Emma tries to get her to eat but then she starts on about how awful it is for the poor children. And then she asks for more wine. Her next claim is that she should have been in the photos since she was Nic’s bridesmaid and forgets that Emma was Nic’s bridesmaid. The she spots Will and aims for him. She makes very loud condolences and then compares his experience with when Chris was kicked by the horse and says she is so sorry he wasn’t as lucky she was. But he mustn’t blame himself. It isn’t his fault he didn’t notice Nice was dying. Clarrie appears and tells Alice to stop. Alice drunkenly says she didn’t mean to upset anyone and then is rude to Nic’s mum. Clarrie tells her to leave. They don’t want her there. Eddie show her out. Clarrie is furious. She’s ruined what was already an impossible day. How is this going to leave William?
