03 April 1997
Characters: Eddie, George, Jack, James Miller, Janice Hawkins, Shula, Simon, Susan
- George is still angry at Jack’s suggestion that he retire, but Jack suggests that he take a well-deserved holiday and mull it over.
- Susan goes behind her employer’s back and tells James Miller about her suspicions that Simon is going to drop all the publicised plans and cover Grange Farm in high-subsidy flax instead.
- Eddie’s on the stand and is trying his best, although when Janice Hawkins, Simon’s barrister, gets to him she wastes no time in bringing up all his past indiscretions such as the prosecution for not dipping his sheep in 1991, the frequent complaints to the Estate about his fences, the slurry pollution of the Am in 1993, ad infinitum.
- Jack testimony was fairly innocuous, but at the end of the penultimate day, Eddie is downbeat to James’ quiet confidence, he’s sure that the panel won’t be impressed with Simon’s flash legal team and Eddie can’t wait for the “slimy git” to get his comeuppence when Shula testifies tomorrow ….
