Characters: Alistair, John, Lynda, Nigel, Pat, Shula, Tony
- An end of an era at Honeysuckle Cottage as Nigel oversees the packing of Nelson’s stuff. He and Shula do a bit of reminiscing as bits of furniture they’ve known for years are taken out. Lynda arrives and is saddened, she considers Ambridge without Nelson unthinkable. Later Pat and Tony, too, express their sadness, it will be a poorer place without his wit and erudition. Everyone is still not sure what’s going on because all the removers can say is that they are taking it to Southampton.
- Nigel manages to get through to Spain eventually, although not to Nelson, but to his Mother, recently returned from Ibiza, she’s surprised too as Ellen and Nelson are in Madrid and she thought he was returning to Blighty soon. She’s wondering if this is an elaborate wedding plot, although Nigel’s not sure which sister would be the bride if that were the case!
- Alistair and Shula “enjoy” a pleasant time (if an appaling meal) at a family pub (with a play area that Daniel adores).
- The village is generally annoyed at the planning application, many considering it the prime motive for buying the land in the first place. Tony though, after a chat with a representative of Borchester Water, has put two and two together – that the pipe across his land is connected to the pipe to the new development, which could gain them support.
- Lynda drops Tommy in it as she mentions to his parents that she and Robert found him hitching and gave him a lift home. John, who seems to have spent the night away from the village, is giving the third degree from his mother for taking Tommy to a pub and then leaving him there!
