Characters: DI Coverdale, Eddie, Hayley, John, Roy, Sharon, Usha
- Hayley’s on her way to work and meets Eddie in the shop. He asks her to keep an eye on Joe and Phil and Jill’s party at the weekend, but she admits that she might not be going – but blames illness, not mentioning her split from John.
- Roy tries to talk to her, admitting in passing that he’s known for a few weeks. She’s pragmatic about it, blaming Sharon, suspecting that this was why she returned, but it won’t make a difference, these things happen but she’s not coming back.
- DI Coverdale is “clarifying” Eddie’s statements and in so doing Usha, as his counsel, is getting quite annoyed at the tactics of having Eddie try to explain why others’ statements, notably Clive’s and Snatch’s, do not tally with his. Later Usha admits that she thinks the police to be digging and that is there was any real evidence he would have been charged by now.
- Sharon’s been chasing John, even to the extent of coming by the cottage with some things, expecting to be installed as the new co-habitee. This is not what John wants and he turns her away with a stinging rebuke, accusing her of ruining his life and that the cottage was his and Hayley’s and he never wants to see her again.
