Characters: Caroline, John, Marjorie, Mike, Pat, Roy, Shula, Tony
- A mixed Valentine’s Day for the villagers: Shula received a single red rose, presumably from Alistair, Caroline was the lucky recipient of a dozen red roses – from whom she knows not, she suspects Graham but Shula teases her with the idea that it was Larry Lovell! (Shula asked Alistair who it might have been and, in a cagey way, he refused to say.) Roy is not saying how it went, but is very nervous of telling John that he spent it with Hayley (albeit just as friends), these nerves are manifest in a grouchy mood and snapping at anyone in range.
- Marjorie has a beech tree which she asks Mike if he could bring down, an offer of work he accepts.
- Pat and Tony are concerned about John’s fast living, especially as it is starting to impact on his work around the farm.
- John is regaling Roy with his feelings over Valentine’s day, about his perfectly nice date – who wasn’t Hayley. While Roy is plucking up the courage to say that she was with him, Tony and Mike wander over to join them for a birthday pint for Tony and Roy bottles in the face of company ….
