Characters: Brian, Debbie, Elizabeth, Lynda, Mike, Neil, Nigel
- Neil admits to Mike, who is busy with Brian’s gates, that he is still lying to Susan and that it is getting harder. He saw a big pharmaceutical firm last week and now they want him to attend a personnel selection weekend. He has told Susan that Borchester Mills are sending him on a training weekend. Brian gives him an encouraging response to his enquiry about casual work but refers him to Debbie, who thinks it odd that he is seeking casual work when he has a full time job.
- It is Elizabeth’s birthday and Nigel is planning to take her out to dinner but first he has been delegated to go on Shula’s errand to Felpersham to buy Phil’s present. Debbie stays longer than she should, eating birthday cake; she is supposed to be helping her dad sort out the lambs.
- Brian is struggling on alone and Lynda seizes the opportunity to berate him for destroying hedges to widen gates; he tries to explain the economics of the new combine harvester but she is clearly not convinced. Lynda will give him no peace until he tells her what he is going to do with the gentian field. Actually he has decided to rent out the grass but the temptation is too great: he tells her he is going to plough it up!
- Over dinner in an Italian restaurant, Elizabeth tells Nigel that Nelson rang her on her birthday. His financial affairs were much worse than they suspected. He did not say where he was but Lizzie is convinced he is not coming back. She is to ask Marjorie to look after his dog on a permanent basis. It is sad but typical, he always was an unpredictable rogue; they are going to miss him.
