Characters: Betty, Hayley, Jack, Neil, Sean, Tommy
- Tommy’s been practising hard for cricket and it’s paying off as Sean has noticed the effort and improvements, except he’s more concerned with the state of the ground. For years Higgs has prepared the pitches and cut the grass, only it’s getting a little much for him. Jack has offered to replace him with another of his staff though.
- Eric’s situation is a matter of some concern. The next sow to go on heat is due tomorrow and Alistair is to be called when it occurs. Tommy was having great difficulty stuttering the status reports to Hayley. It appears that they, erm, need the vet there to check that, well, to see, that, you know, whether he can, erm, if he’s hurt his, well, you know.
- World Cup fever is starting to sweep Ambridge. Sean’s looking forward to the custom that the Cat’s wide-screen TV will bring. The talk of the Grundys’ tickets is rife and Neil makes the connection of 26th June with the England game.
- Betty tells Jack that she’s a little bemused as to why they need to interview Susan, although he’s sure that they’ll get more applicants than just her and he reminds her of the last off-the-cuff appointment they made – Sharon (conveniently forgetting that Kate and Peggy have worked there since). Later he shocks her by asking her to be part of the interview process, a prospect that she’s not too sure about – and expects Susan to be even less happy with.
