  • An early start on the day of the bypass protest and Brian’s amazed that Lynda and Marjorie are involved in such nonsense, but Kate starts to wind her father up again.
  • Hayley and John are heading down too, although John’s not so keen.
  • A huge crowd and some inspiring speeches, circus entertainers and TV crews. Roy’s around, keeping an eye on Brenda, rather than supporting the protest.
  • A change in atmosphere and some of the Ambridge contigent start to try to leave, but the growing number of police start to round people up. Hayley is being manhandled into a van as John intervenes, extracating her but getting ensnared himself. Amongst the hubbub Marjorie and Lynda are invited to the station too, without a caution as the aware Lynda points out.
  • John’s being asked for his details as Lynda and Marjorie seek to found out the situation, defending John as being from a respectable family.
  • Brian arrives to find that Kate’s been arrested and is being held overnight to appear before the magistrates in the morning. John, seeing a chance, observes to the custody sergeant that Kate and her friend Luther seemed to have been two of the ringleaders ….
