  • Pip helps David with a new calf that is not breathing, and manages to get it to take its first breath, to David’s relief.
  • Lynda meets Kathy bearing an armful of files. She has much to do if Martyn is to be appeased. Lynda feels Kathy should take some rest or she will end up like Caroline. Kathy feels shingles might be preferable to Martyn’s hounding of her.
  • Pip thinks her parents did the right thing in staying with dairying. Milk prices have gone up, and soon she will be able to work full-time on the farm. David seems less sure that this is a good idea.
  • Lynda is anxious to know who will take over as relief manager when Caroline and Oliver go on holiday. She tries to pump Shula for information, without success, and then Kathy, who also has no idea. Lynda is convinced that she is in the running. Who else could they ask?
  • Alan is desperate to recruit volunteers for The Elms, and takes Shula aback by asking her. Unable to find a good reason for saying no, Shula finds herself volunteering for a few hours a week. Alan assures her that she will find it rewarding. Shula seems less convinced.
  • David tells Ruth about his conversation with Pip. While they are pleased she is so positive and determined, there is still Ben and Josh to consider. Unlike Brian’s bovine empire, Brookfield will not be able to support the entire family.
