  • There’s a Christmas surprise for Joe; he must come outside for it but grumpily objects. When he does, it is worth the effort: Eddie has fixed handles on the trap to make it easier for Joe to climb aboard. Darrell comes to say Happy Christmas but doesn’t intend to stay: he feels too dishevelled. Clarrie puts her foot down and ushers him towards a hot bath.
  • At Bridge Farm, a nervous Tom welcomes his grandmother; she of course is the one person who understands the cause of his nervousness. She mentions that they have come via Blossom Hill Cottage, for old time’s sake, and there was a car outside.
  • The Grundys set about opening presents and the last one is for Darrell. He was not expecting Santa and has nothing to give in return. No matter, they are so glad to have him here.
  • Helen takes a call; it’s from Rob who wants to talk, though not today – Friday evening – and he will call again to arrange where and when. When Helen re-joins the family, Tom is about to reveal his surprise for Kirsty. It’s a cracker – more precisely it’s in a cracker; it’s a diamond ring and it comes with a question. Kirsty’s answer is positive; how could it be otherwise after such a romantic proposal?
  • Darrell enjoyed his lunch but then slipped quietly away.
