  • Calamity! Ian is due to judge the May Day cake competition today but his sous-chef has gone sick, so he must supervise lunch at Grey Gables. He will pop down and make the decision before lunch but Lynda must find someone else to present the prizes – which are hand carved wooden spoons; Lynda has to go and collect them …
  • … and on the way back suffers a puncture. Fortunately the cavalry comes riding to the rescue in the shape of PC Burns. He was going to Ambridge anyway because he and a colleague are running a driving simulation, showing the effect of drink on a driver’s performance. What a nice young man.
  • There is a story going round among the kids that PC Burns arrested Lynda for cycling under the influence. Emma delights in repeating the gossip but Lynda is distinctly unamused.
  • Fallon greets the handsome policeman with customary coolness, even when he buys the plant stand she has for sale. He declares that she has an eye for such things. When Lynda announces who is to present the prizes, it’s that man again – PC Burns. The first category is tea bread which has been won, with an outstanding banana bread, by Fallon; her prize is presented accompanied by a kiss. Nic wins a prize too – but no kiss. Clarrie also wins and is the overall winner – but no kiss.
  • Later Fallon tells him off for taking advantage of the situation; he protests it was just a peck on the cheek but, as Fallon points out, he didn’t ‘peck’ anybody else. Lynda’s verdict: such a charming man; she advises Fallon that a good man is hard to find and PC Burns will not be on the market for long.
