Charlie gives Adam a farming idea. Lilian is low.
Radio Times: Charlie surprises Adam, and Lilian is feeling low.
Characters: Adam, Charlie, David, Jennifer, Jim, Lilian- At Home Farm, Lilian is in a mope: she went out on the town with her new look last night and failed to pull. It was a disaster. Lynda calls and does nothing to improve Lilian’s mood, wanting to rearrange everything at the Dower House, the better to suit her Feng Shui. Lilian makes her exit when Jim and David arrive for a Flood Action meeting.
- Charlie calls at his patronising best, inviting Adam to see something exciting when he has finished his current menial and unimportant task. When Adam makes his way over to Charlie’s office, a welcome beer is waiting. Charlie expresses an interest in cricket when his leg improves. The real reason for the visit is a video by a farmer in Ohio who has developed his own grazing system; Charlie thinks Adam will be impressed.
- Jim has collected so many reports saying much the same thing. There really should be more support. A common belief is that Ambridge suffered to save Borchester, but they must stick to the facts. There are many references to blocked ditches and drains and to flood defences in the wrong places.
- Unbelievable! Charlie was right. The video show a scheme that is profitable (Charlie approves) and sustainable (that impresses Adam). The depth of fertile topsoil was increased from 3″ to 20″ in 15 years – staggering! Adam is grateful for the opportunity to see it. Charlie thinks that, whatever their differences, farmers must stick together.
- Now they should call a meeting of the full Flood Committee. David expects a rough ride with Kenton. They have to accept that flooding can occur again; next time they must be better prepared.
