Lynda must face the permanent loss of Scruff, Kenton makes a large purchase on credit and David faces considerable competition from Justin Elliott.
Radio Times: Lynda feels a glimmer of hope, and Brookfield feels the competition.
Characters: David, Jolene, Kenton, Lilian, Lynda, Pip- Lynda is preparing for a visit to the dog rescue centre because they called to say a dog answering Scruff’s description is in residence, although traumatised and in poor condition. Lilian kindly offers to go with Lynda because she is too distressed to go by herself.
- Kenton and Jolene discuss the break-in at Christine’s cottage. They would like to do something but are at a loss as to what they can contribute since they are so pressed for funds.
- Pip brings sandwiches out to David. They also discuss Christine’s problems and that leads to Kenton and the cancelled television gift order. Pip notes that she has invited the Fairbrothers to participate in the Young Farmers’ treasure hunt.
- Kenton takes delivery of a 50″ television. Jolene is very worried after Kenton confesses that he put the purchase on a credit card. Jolene can’t make Kenton understand that more credit card debt might sink them. Kenton promises that he won’t put anything else on credit and that Jolene won’t regret this expense. The television will more than pay for itself.
- Pip points out that Berrow Farm has all sorts of prizes and demonstrations advertised for open farm day. Pip is concerned that Brookfield Farm plans look small and insignificant in comparison. David notes that they simply don’t have the resources that Justin Elliott does but there is still a lot of loyalty in Ambridge toward Brookfield. David tries to be optimistic but his doubts come through. Pip is positive in her responses but both father and daughter end their discussion in a rather defeated silence.
- Poor Lynda finds that the rescued dog looks nothing like Scruff. She is despondent; Scruff has been missing for 3 months now. Lynda sadly tells Lilian that she must face the fact that he is never coming back.
