  • At the police station, Helen has a DNA swab and is asked if she wants anyone notified of her whereabouts. Her parents are aware. DS Madeley urges her to have free, independent legal advice but she refuses, not fully realising the seriousness of her situation. She’s told she can change her mind later. DS Madeley goes to speak to Kirsty, leaving her colleague with Helen. She must change her clothes and await the arrival of a Dr. Sharma, for further examination.
  • Kirsty gives Tom a phone update; she’s shocked that her clothes have been taken as evidence. There are people at the farm from Children’s Services about Henry, who’s very upset. She hangs up as DS Madeley enters. She is questioned about the phone she gave Helen, about the degree of joint planning, about when she knew Helen was leaving Rob. Feeling cornered and pressured, Kirsty rather loudly expresses her view that she was scared for Helen and just wanted her to get out. The officer attempts to calm her, and continues to “build the picture.” Just when did she know that Helen was planning to leave?
  • Helen is medically examined by Dr. Sharma. He notes her prescription for anti-depressants and some red marks on her arm, of unknown origin. Elsewhere, Kirsty is speaking to the Detective Sergeant. She asks if Kirsty has any first-hand evidence of Rob hitting Helen. No. But there was a slap … but she hadn’t witnessed it. She asks if Kirsty would regard Rob as a generally violent man, in her experience. No … but he plays mind games! But in general terms, violent? Well … no!
  • The doctor leaves, instructing that Helen should be kept under supervision in view of her pregnancy. He also calls for a mental health assessment. As Kirsty comes through for her own tests, she inadvertently sees Helen. Both women are upset and are quickly parted. When they have left the scene, DS Madeley comments darkly to a colleague that she’s sure that Kirsty believes that she’s only helping her friend. Still, Helen can rest now. Proper interviews will start tomorrow. Her colleague wonders just how on one hand you can be preparing to bring a baby into the world while on the other, you can “do a thing like that”. Hmm!
  • At Bridge Farm, Kirsty tells Pat, Tony and Tom that Helen was leaving Rob. There was no third party involved, no “burglar” as suggested by Pat. She had taken such a lot of abuse from Rob. She must have snapped. Her parents are astonished but Tom admits to thoughts that Helen had been sidelined from the shop. Pat can’t believe her ears, was she the only one not to have seen it coming? Kirsty has further news. She believes that she may have made matters worse her own conversations with the police. She really feels that Helen needs a solicitor.
  • Helen meets Dominic Farrell, a colleague of Usha’s, who has been appointed as her defence solicitor by her family. She becomes upset at the thought of not seeing Henry. Dominic explains that she will be at the police station for some time. Her best course is to tell him exactly what happened. Later, Helen is interviewed by DS Madeley, in the presence of Dominic. He indicates that he feels that his client is in a state of shock. She will exercise her right to remain silent. DS Madeley insists that medical advice says that she is fit to be questioned. And with that, the interview starts. How did your evening begin? Describe your relationship. Had it been violent before? Why didn’t you call an ambulance? To each question, Helen gave the quiet reply, “no comment.”
