Helen’s cause may not be helped by thoughtless interventions; Rob the elder, sorry Bruce, is determined to see Helen “hang”.

Radio Times: Susan stirs the pot, and Fallon has unwanted company.

  • Ursula and her husband Bruce wait at the hospital for news of Rob. Ursula is concerned about not having been allowed to see him. Bruce seems more interested in putting her down every time she speaks. Eventually, he decides to go outside for a few moments “blessed peace.”
  • At Bridge Farm, Tony is grateful to Fallon for batting off a swarm of journalists. He takes a call from Jennifer leaving Pat talking to Tom. She’s riddled with guilt; Rob was so supportive. Tom had misgivings but insists that Kirsty suspected the truth. Pat says that she should have trusted her first instincts. She didn’t like him but he seemed to make Helen happy. Tony hangs up on yet another prying journalist and answers a knock at the door; it’s DS Madeley.
  • Harrison is collecting statements and calls in on Susan Carter. Of course, statements are the last things on her mind; she wants every last lurid detail. Eventually, she admits that she actually heard nothing but nevertheless feels the need to tell him of Helen’s history. She’s highly strung, has been hospitalised with anorexia and in Susan’s view, became unbalanced after Greg’s suicide. Of course, Susan likes to be helpful wherever possible.
  • DS Madeley questions those at Bridge Farm. Pat, in particular, makes a meal of giving details of Helen’s “fragility” and previous mental health issues. Madeley suggests a possible relapse. “Precisely,” says Pat! However, they all agreed that there was no history of violent behaviour. Finally, arrangements are made for Henry to be questioned by specially trained officers the following day. At the hospital, Bruce gives Ursula the news that following surgery, Rob will be fitted with a stoma. Her tears are greeted by his command to stop crying. She apologises. He says sharply that her tears won’t help now.
  • Fallon is still fending off members of the fourth estate when she bumps into Susan. She’s been approached by a journalist and has given her views on Rob. In her eyes, he was a hero in the flood! She leaves as Harrison arrives home. He tells Fallon what he’s discovered about Helen in local interviews, mainly Susan’s. Fallon’s horrified, it’s just gossip and has nothing to do with anything. Helen’s their friend! Harrison gently disagrees, if his bosses wish to pursue it, then it’s relevant.
  • At Bridge Farm, Tom gives Pat some good advice. They should stop making statements about Helen’s mental health until they’ve spoken to her solicitor. Pat spots Ursula and Bruce parking in the drive. The meeting is far from amicable. Bruce wonders why Tony would be interested in Rob’s health, as his daughter cost Rob his job, his marriage and made him father another man’s child. Pat flares in response; Rob was cruel to Helen. Bruce lists Rob’s injuries. He barks an instruction to Ursula to say what they have done. Dutifully she steps forward saying that she knew that Helen was dangerous from the start. Indeed, Pat had witnessed her threats to kill Rob. She further announces that they have just come from the police station and have made a full statement to that effect.
