Adam is frustrated by Brian’s ultimatum over the soil enrichment programme.
Radio Times: The Grundys pull out all the stops, and Jennifer is caught in the middle.
Characters: Adam, Brian, Clarrie, Eddie, Emma, Jennifer, Joe- Upon awakening, Eddie wishes Clarrie a Happy Anniversary and gives her a large conch shell. He declared this was as close as he could get to coral. Clarrie says she thought their anniversary called for jade and she hands Eddie a pair of jade cufflinks. (Eddie Grundy? Cufflinks?) Eddie, suave as ever asks Clarrie if they are real jade. ‘Of course’, replies Clarrie, ‘but I know you rarely wear cufflinks’. (Then why spring for jewellery?) Eddie declares loyally he’ll wear them all day. Fallon found them for Clarrie but she is off to work. Eddie is pleased to report that he arranged for a day off for Clary and they are going on a trip.
- Eddie and Clarrie have a cooked breakfast thanks to Emma who has also put a picnic hamper in the van. Joe comes in to announce Bartleby is doing better than ever; the new vet’s treatment has worked. While driving, Eddie reveals to Clarrie that they are going to Bournemouth. She is thrilled: ‘Ohhh, Eddie!’
- Adam confronts Jennifer and Brian. He wants Jennifer to hear what Brian has decided about the herbal lays.
- The anniversary couple are enjoying their day out in Bournemouth even if the sun isn’t shining. Clarrie is reminded of her childhood happy memories and she is thrilled.
- Brian objects that Jennifer will be partial and he is inclined to dismiss Adam’s arguments. Jenny can’t understand why the experiment can’t continue for another year to give it a chance to work. Brian walks out and refuses to listen any further. Jenny apologises for Brian’s hard-headedness. Maybe he will change his mind, hopes Jenny, but Adam is sceptical.
- Now back home, Clarrie is amazed to find that the cider shed has been transformed by fairy lights and candles. Joe is the head waiter and Will and Edward with their families will be joining them shortly for dinner. Thanks all around to Emma and Nic for cooking the Grundy Thanksgiving dinner. Joe’s snores indicate his satisfaction and Clarrie thinks this was much better than going to a fancy restaurant. Clarrie declares she is lucky to have such clever daughters-in-law. The whole day has been wonderful and after 35 years, Eddie can still surprise Clarrie, even if it is not always in a good way!
