Adam decides to accept Brian’s challenge.
Radio Times: There is a gathering at Bridge Farm, and Adam makes a decision.
Characters: Adam, Charlie, Helen, Ian, Johnny, Pat, Rob, Tom, Tony- Adam is preoccupied by the dilemma that Brian has presented to him. Ian’s view is that they should take up Debbie’s offer of a new life in Hungary and put an end to Brian breathing down Adam’s neck.
- The cricket team have assembled – save for the late Mr Titchener; even Johnny, who yesterday celebrated his 17th birthday, has made it on time. Adam has chosen to bowl, while Tony and Pat look on. Tony is feeling stronger, even to the point of thinking about umpiring again. Johnny bowls well, thanks to some coaching from Rob, and the opposition are all out for 153. That Rob has also been coaching Josh and Jamie leads Adam to be vigilant that he is not getting bigger than the team – no love lost there! They win by 8 wickets.
- Adam assures Charlie that Ian enjoyed his day at Edgbaston. He takes the opportunity to seek Charlie’s advice on his future. Charlie’s view is clear: if he goes to Hungary without putting his ideas to the test, he will never know. If Adam believes in his plan then he has to prove it to himself and to Brian. Go for it!
- The family, gathered at Helen’s, soon find themselves drinking a toast to Mr & Mrs Titchener. They even sound sincere. The happy couple defend their quiet wedding (which they had set up weeks ago) because they both wanted no fuss or bother.
- When Adam gets home it is to report that he has been to see Brian and has accepted his offer. Ian is surprised – it’s not what they had discussed earlier – but he will back Adam 100%. Adam is sure he will not regret it; he is going to show everyone that he can be his own man.
