Ambridge has more than its share of insomniacs.

Radio Times: Brian cannot sleep, and Tony puts pressure on Helen.

Characters: Brian, Helen, Jennifer, Pat, Peggy, Rob, Tony

• Unable to sleep because of his sciatica, Brian wakes Jenny as he hunts for his tablets. He launches into another tirade about the builders, who are entirely to blame.
• At Bridge Farm neither Pat nor Tony can sleep, though Camomile tea rather than painkillers is the chosen option there. It seems that most of Ambridge is sleepless, with Adam out drilling maize by the light of his tractor headlights. Tony launches into another tirade, not about builders but about Tom’s irresponsibility. Pat just wishes Tom would come home.
• Just as Brian gets to sleep, he and Jenny are woken by the burglar alarm going off. Brian investigates, and the burglar is none other than the robin which Big Steve the builder insists on feeding. As Jenny coos over it, Brian sets it free.
• Helen wants to leave Henry with Pat for an hour. As Peggy will be coming to talk to Tony about her garden, Pat agrees. Helen’s arrival coincides with the letter from the Soil Association. The pigs have lost their organic status, but the rest of the enterprise has had its status reconfirmed.
• Jenny and Brian have a little treat, as Jenny coyly calls it, enjoying Ian’s lovely food at Grey Gables. Brian is half asleep, and appears virtually comatose when his wife wants an in-depth discussion on the relative merits of ceramic or brass door furniture and the various paint finishes. Apparently even Clarrie has refused the offer of Jennifer’s old kitchen. Jenny has a strategy meeting lined up with Buddy later. Decisions are, after all, so very difficult to make.
• Peggy talks to Pat and Tony about having a hand rail in the garden. Tony brusquely suggests asking Mike. When they tell Peggy about the letter from the Soil Association, Pat and Tony are shocked to discover that Rob and Helen have already told her about the possibility of losing their status. Peggy then grandly announces that she has some sympathy with Rob’s view that the loss of status might not be such a bad thing. At this point Helen reappears with Rob, who seizes the opportunity to reaffirm his views. When Rob goes to the car, Tony demands to know whose side Helen is on. Weakly and unconvincingly Helen says she is on the side of her parents.
