Brian needs to avoid Kate. Ed needs to avoid Susan. Peggy is unable to avoid Hazel.
Radio Times: Peggy has an unwelcome visitor. Meanwhile, Adam is taking the long view.
Characters: Adam, Brian, Ed, Hazel, Peggy, Tom- Seeking refuge from Kate, Brian lends a hand in the poly-tunnels. He is annoyed that Kate has turned down an interview for a job in a fast food outlet, but Adam is more sympathetic; it would compromise Kate’s principles. Talk turns to the village meeting and in particular, to Susan’s views. Brian overheard her telling Sabrina that the reason for David and Ruth’s change of plan was actually Justin Elliott’s pulling out following the flood. Adam again confounds Brian by suggesting they, too, should look at the big picture.
- Peggy is expecting a visitor, who is late, so Tom stays on to chat after bringing over some sausages. They are interrupted by Hazel, who claims to have rushed to get there, which is odd given that Tom saw her half an hour before in conversation with a man outside the shop. Hazel dismisses Tom with her accustomed rudeness, then proceeds to demand that Peggy produce papers noting an informal agreement whereby Hazel could bring guests along to shoots. Peggy tells her firmly there has never been any such thing. Hazel then sneers at Peggy’s choice of wording on Jack’s headstone and sweeps out. Good riddance mutters Peggy.
- Adam is convinced that their farming methods are destroying the soil structure, and that they must look at changing the way they do things. Brian is dismissive; profit is what matters.
- As Ed enjoys a pint paid for by Kirsty’s donation to the Grundy family at The Bull, and a chance to escape Susan, he is joined by Tom, but when Ed mentions the generous donor, Tom goes quiet and leaves.
