David is not best pleased with the poor planning of the Fairbrothers and Phoebe tells Kate some cruel truths.

Radio Times: Phoebe has no time for Kate, and David gets goosed.

Characters: , , , , ,
  • David is sceptical about leasing to the Fairbrothers. Pip tries to convince David otherwise but Pip is silenced when they come upon a tent in the yard. Rex tries to convince his new landlord that the tent is only for occasional kips and swears the brothers are not staying permanently in the tent.
  • Phoebe tries to refuse Kate entry into her room. Kate won’t leave until Phoebe opens her door. Kate claims she was only looking out for Phoebe’s welfare. She is Phoebe’s mother, after all. Phoebe asks in what sense has Kate been her mother? Kate is always been claiming to be her friend. Phoebe and Alex had planned this to be a beautiful first time but Kate ruined everything with her dramatic interference.
  • David tells Rex that he wasn’t expecting so many goslings. Toby bought 250 instead of the planned 100 because he found a great deal, Pip laughingly tells her father. David is less than amused but he notes that when the goslings are put out to grass, the brothers will have to erect protection against foxes. Rex lamely replies that he and Toby will set up night watches but David wisely points out that hungry vixens with kits will not wait for the cover of darkness. He suggests netting rather than a more expensive fencing but something will have to be done. Pip goes to wake up Toby in the tent but unexpectedly surprises him washing off in the altogether. Pip gathers her wits, hands Toby a towel and invites the brothers to a livestock event next week. Tom is hiring a minibus and there is plenty of room. Rex jumps at the offer but Toby is too busy with rugby commitments. David stresses that the field is a temporary arrangement only until they find a more permanent arrangement and takes his leave.
  • Kate chases after Phoebe and tells her she was only doing what any good friend would do, the mothering claims having fallen short. Kate declares that Phoebe should have talked it over with her first. Phoebe retorts that she and Alex had planned this out with much discussion between the two of them; Phoebe throws out the angry rejoinder that she knows Kate shagged Toby Fairbrother who is a much younger acquaintance without ‘thinking’ it through first. Did Kate talk to her mother before she lost her virginity, Phoebe presses further? Phoebe says she is off on her bike to see her father; if Kate tells anyone about this incident or if Kate tries to interfere in Phoebe’s life again, Phoebe swears that she will never, ever speak to Kate again.
