  • Ed tells Emma that Oliver will do the morning milking on Saturday so that Ed and Emma can have a lie in after Ed’s birthday celebration. A tight-lipped Emma informs Ed that they have no money to go out: it all went on the food shopping. She snaps at George who wants to take some tins for the school Harvest Festival, and ponders asking Ruth for another advance. Ed puts his foot down; there was no need to pay for George’s Karate all in one go. They must just make do. He will go The Bull for his birthday because he has already invited people, but Emma opts to stay home.
  • Mike has lost more customers from the milk round, and Vicky wonders how they will manage when she gives up work. Mike has decided not to replace Harry, and do the round himself. He will do his best for Vicky and the baby.
  • Jamie impresses Mike with his chainsaw skills. He is unenthusiastic about his college course, and later, when Ruth tells him that Pip could tell him everything he needs to know about Felpersham University, Jamie tells her there is no point in ending up with student debt.
  • Will brings George to The Bull for fish and chips, where George tells him that Ed and Emma are rowing about money. This gives Will a golden opportunity to sound off about his brother’s profligacy, though Eddie does his best to defend Ed and Emma. Nevertheless, Will tells George that money is no object where he is concerned. George can have whatever he wants. Will doesn’t pay maintenance so that Ed and Emma can fritter it away.
