  • Eddie’s brother Alf turns up to attend Eddie’s birthday party. Alf apologises for past wrongs. The brothers hug and forgive past wrongs which seem mainly to be incidents where Alf stole from the family.
  • Kirsty calls a domestic abuse helpline. She tells the advisor that her friend used to be a strong, independent woman but now she is completely controlled by her husband. Kirsty is told that domestic abuse is now a criminal offence. Kirsty regrets her promise to Helen that she won’t tell anyone about Rob hitting Helen. She is in denial, Kirsty tells the advisor. Kirsty then is advised that Helen herself should call the helpline.
  • Joe is overcome when he sees Alf in the kitchen. Alf asks for cider and thereby shows his Grundy credentials. George meets his great uncle Alf and asks if he is still a burglar. Ed groans with embarrassment.
  • The Grundys show up at the party en masse. Alf flirts with Jolene who is calling the barn dances. The band is a great hit including a special song with Eddie as the subject. In his speech, Eddie gives a heartfelt toast to Clarrie for putting up with him all these years. Clarrie goes to buy a round and, oh dear, she is missing two twenty pound notes from her purse.
  • Kirsty calls Helen and leaves a message for her to return the call as soon as she can.
  • Eddie and Alf end the evening with a drunken discussion about their lives. Eddie notes that he may be living in a borrowed house but he is surrounded by family and that is what matters.
