Hazel insults Peggy; Rob reveals his plans for Helen and Tom’s shop; David backs Ruth’s plans for Heather.

Radio Times: Peggy talks shop, and Rob explains himself.

Characters: , , , , , ,
  • Peggy complains that Hazel has turned up unannounced and Chris has to leave abruptly. Peggy notes that closing the shop would be against Jack’s wishes. Hazel retorts that the shop produces no income; supermarkets deliver and everything is online these days. Hazel is insulting even when Peggy tries to find a middle ground.
  • Rob turns up to ‘offer opinions’ on the new shop and restaurant. Tom finds out that Rob has left his job at the dairy. Isn’t it a bit sudden, Tom asks? Rob plans to use his extra time helping out the family business. Is this the perfect job, Rob has been telling Helen he was waiting for?
  • Hazel ends Peggy’s attempts to compromise. Peggy points out that locals will not be able to rent these new luxury apartments. They will be weekend getaways for city professionals, Hazel trumpets. It appears that Hazel is doing this to repay Peggy over Jack’s headstone.
  • Ruth and David talk over the tagging of the cows. Ruth says she is going to ring her mother at lunchtime; does she have David’s backing for Heather to come to Brookfield or not?
  • Rob argues with Helen’s ideas for decorations; he thinks it is looking backward instead of a modern aesthetic. He wants clean white with an appeal to professionals. When Helen mentions that Fallon will be running the café, Rob objects to relying on friends. When Tom brings up the meeting with the architect that he and Helen will attend, Rob wants a change in architects as well. ‘Thanks for your input’, patient Tom says as he ends the discussion. ‘It has been … useful.’
  • David tells Ruth that he is genuinely torn. He wants both of them to be sure about this decision. Ruth repeats that Jill has other children to look after her; Heather has only Ruth. David is reluctant but asks what if the change is too much for Heather once she makes the move. How would Ruth feel if anything went wrong? Ruth points out that she would have the comfort that Heather would be surrounded by those who love her if she went. David replies that Ruth should ring now and tell Heather they will not take no for an answer. A jubilant Ruth has only one further question: ‘How will they tell Jill?’
