Helen has a teary secret meeting with Kirsty and Josh offers the Fairbrothers a business proposition

Radio Times: Josh flexes his business muscles, and Helen needs a friend.

Characters: , , , , ,
  • Rob regrets that he can’t accompany Helen to her scan today but he has the perfect solution. He will arrange their shifts so that they will always work together and have all their time off together. Helen apologises again for her attempt at a run for freedom, er, her attempt to take Henry on an unannounced outing. Since Rob has to drive Helen everywhere, it will be more efficient. He has also booked a taxi to take her to the scan; she tries to tell him that her father was going to take her but Rob says he has told Tony that there is no need. The minute Rob leaves, Helen calls Kirsty and asks her if she can meet in Borchester.
  • Toby accosts Josh about the grass-fed egg plan and is surprised to hear that Josh is in favour of the scheme. Josh even makes some suggestions about where Toby can market his product.
  • Kirsty and Helen meet for cake and tea. Helen shows Kirsty the things she has bought from a charity shop. Apologies abound about the missed train journey but Kirsty delicately probes Helen about her situation. Helen becomes teary and apologises to Kirsty for not telling her about Tom’s doubts before the wedding. Helen cries openly in the tea room and criticises herself for making all the wrong decisions and losing all her friends. Kirsty carefully asks Helen what is wrong; she is worried about Helen and she doesn’t believe it is just hormones. Why did they have to meet in Borchester? Why did Helen have to call Kirsty from the garden in the dark? Suddenly Helen notices the time and rushes out.
  • Tom is interested in the Fairbrothers’ eggs for scotch eggs. Fallon may also use them for breakfasts. Rex feels bad about competing with Josh when he is the one who suggested Tom and Fallon but Toby cynically notes that he didn’t twist Josh’s arm; he volunteered the tips. Josh turns up and says that Tom and Fallon both called him about Toby’s visits. Toby tries to fend off Josh with a twenty for his marketing suggestions but Josh suddenly gets serious. He has big plans for the Fairbrothers’ eggs and he wants a part of the business. Toby says no right away, but Rex asks Josh to have a drink and discuss his ideas. The organic and free range egg business isn’t expanding, declares Josh. Customers need a new product to attract their interest, like pastured eggs. Josh wants a partnership. Why would they need him, asks Toby indignantly? Josh points out that the Fairbrothers hadn’t even done the basic marketing until he pointed them in the right direction. They are inexperienced city guys, Josh notes, unlike himself who has been in the egg business since he was 15. The Fairbrother name is unknown in the area and this is one reason the geese endeavour was so difficult to bring to a profitable conclusion. Josh, on the other hand, is well known and he can get the Fairbrothers into new places. Josh stands up: Take his advice or leave it. Rex takes it and they begin to talk percentages.
  • Rob called the landline and Helen was not home when expected; he asks Helen where she was. She tells him she went to a few charity shops but, unsurprisingly, doesn’t mention the meeting with Kirsty. Rob likes these items; they aren’t tarty like the ones she ordered online. You aren’t exactly Kim Kardashian, are you, asks Rob? Vulnerable Helen agrees shakily.
