  • For her parents and brother, the wait to go into court for Helen’s bail hearing is agonising. When Anna appears, Pat is obliged to make herself scarce. Awkward. Tom is not sure whether his effort yesterday has borne fruit. The judge is a woman; is that a good thing? Anna will go to see if Helen has arrived and how she will plea.
  • Anna has prepared two statements. Helen indicates which one she will need. We listeners have to wait until the question is put to her in court. On the charge of attempted murder she pleads not guilty. On the charge of wounding with intent she pleads – also not guilty. Big sigh of relief from the family. The trial date is set for 5 September. On the question of bail, despite the eloquent representation of her barrister, the judge decides that there is a risk of interfering with witnesses and therefore refuses bail. Helen is remanded in custody.
  • Pat is beside herself. This can’t be right. She will have to give birth in custody and without the support of her family. Anna explains to Tom that the decision was the judge’s to make and it is valid within the law and the facts of the case. There is no appeal; there never is. She has not seen Helen yet, then a phone call informs her that a doctor has been called for Helen. Don’t tell her parents just yet.
