Is Ed getting himself in Oliver’s bad books? Is Eddie getting himself in Lynda’s bad books? Ursula undermines Helen’s confidence with great skill.
Radio Times: ‘Mum’ may know best, while Clarrie tries to keep her house in order.
Characters: Adam, Clarrie, Ed, Helen, Johnny, Rob, Ursula- Clarrie finds Ed still at home and asks him what he thinks of Lynda’s shepherd’s hut, especially as the prospective owner wants to make a reconnaissance visit to see how it’s coming along. Clarrie’s not sure that it’s like any hut that she’s ever seen and Ed comments that it could indeed be more “hut-like”. However, time will tell. Neither seems to be wholly convinced.
- Ursula urges Helen to eat more breakfast but she refuses. Then, much to Helen’s surprise, Ursula holds forth on why she feels Helen should give birth at home. Helen tries to explain that she’s opted for a hospital delivery because of the problems she had with Henry, but no … Ursula has the last say. Helen is confused and upset.
- Ed and Adam take a break from nitrogen spreading. Ed expresses his thanks for the work at Home Farm. Adam asks how the cattle are going at Grange Farm. Ed’s unsure about how Oliver will take the news but Adam’s sure that he’ll applaud his enterprise. Johnny turns up and manages to hitch a lift with Adam in the tractor’s cab, to see the technology for himself.
- Ursula tries to tempt Helen to a Danish pastry after her scan. She’s critical of the time they were kept waiting and then launches into the awful story of the events surrounding the birth of her first son, Miles. So bad was it that she opted for a home birth with Rob. That was joyous. Helen is open-mouthed with horror and takes it all in. Ursula insists that Rob would prefer a home birth but of course, it must be Helen’s choice.
- At Home Farm, Johnny gets the low down on the spreading system. He’s lucky, he’s enthusiastic and very similar to someone Adam once knew. Grange Farm finds Clarrie trying to keep her kitchen free from mud (Ed) and droppings (a turkey). She’s running trials on new Scotch egg recipes, as the black pudding variety isn’t popular at the shop. Ed invites his mother to lunch at the Tea Room on Mothering Sunday.
- A tired Helen looks over copies of her scan with Rob as Henry walks in with Ursula. He’s had a chocolate bar. The resultant sugar rush causes him to jump on his mother. She asks him to be careful but he does it again. She shouts at him, leaving Ursula to take him upstairs, amidst many tears. Helen confides in Rob that she’s very confused about the birth. Rob says that he trusts his mother’s judgement in these matters, but the final word must, of course, be Helen’s. Yes, Rob.
