• As she prepares for the pickers’ party, Jennifer is anxious that Ruairidh’s dog should not be seen by some of her county friends, who would sneer at her taste. She enlists Adam’s help in moving a heavy trough to screen it, when Pawel appears and lends a hand. When the trough slips, Jenny fears they have broken the dog, but the trough is the only thing damaged. Adam is still uneasy in Pawel’s company.
• Vicky is unusually quiet when Mike gets home. He makes her go and lie down. Later Vicky explains her fears about an amniocentesis. Mike is lost for words; he wishes she had told him sooner. Finally he admits that the idea of fatherhood at his age was a shock, but now …
• Ian and Pawel enjoy the party, especially heading off the snobby mother of Alice’s friend Charlotte whenever she ventures near the dog. Later Pawel catches Adam on his own, and assures him he will not make trouble between Adam and Ian. He enjoyed his night with Adam; everyone needs fun at times. But if Adam should ever want more fun …
