Jennifer upsets Helen. Rob upsets Helen. The hunt upsets Helen.

Radio Times: Jennifer is on the trail, and the hunt is in trouble.

Characters: , , , ,
  • Pat has left her mobile behind, so Helen decides to drop it off. Rob insists on coming with her, before they set off for the hunt, but Helen refuses to go hunting. Unwilling to be challenged, Rob stands firm; Helen needs a break and it will do her good. There is nothing she can do for Tony. Rob has been to the shop and discussed the rotas for the Christmas rush. As ever, Helen melts into ‘You are so good to me, Rob.’
  • As they wait to go in and see Tony, Jennifer tells Lilian about the ghastly evening at Carol’s. Helen sees them and stops for a chat, but rapidly disappears when Jennifer clumsily talks about the difficulty of broken relationships and the arrival of baby Ethan. That is nothing to do with me or Rob, says Helen as she storms off. Congratulations, darling, breathes Lilian, I thought you handled that beautifully.
  • Jennifer tells her sister that Phoebe is in regular contact with Hayley and has been to Birmingham to see her. She is even speaking more often to Kate. Lilian thinks Roy has lost weight. Small talk does not engage Jennifer; she has something weightier on her mind, and intends to contact Carol’s children. She is sure Carol had something to do with John’s death.
  • The hounds lose the drag scent but pick up a fox, to Helen’s horror. She storms off in distress. When Rob gets home she refuses tea and blames Rob for spoiling the day he promised would be so good for her. When she finds that Rob has hidden the Echo from her, her anger escalates. Doubtless thinking of matters more personal than an account of Tony’s encounter with the bull, Helen demands that Rob should have no secrets from her. He responds by reminding her that he has been running the farm and the shop for her (we all thought Helen had left the shop) and that Charlie is cross with him for not being at Berrow Farm. Meanwhile he will fetch Henry and they will all eat together. Everything will be all right because Rob has made a promise.
  • As Lilian drops off a top for Caroline to wear in Blithe Spirit, Oliver has a call from PC Burns. There has been a report of untoward happenings at the hunt, and in true ‘An Inspector Calls’ style, he is on his way over to talk about it.
