Radio Times: Pip’s attitude causes concern, while Jill faces competition

Characters: , , , , ,
  • In the kitchen at Brookfield, Toby tries to interest Pip in the various ante-natal classes on offer, but she is not greatly interested. Toby, on the other hand, is full of the whole thing, even suggesting Pip go to Yoga. Pip attributes her feelings to the fact that the whole of Borsetshire is giving her advice, none of which she wants. She is pleased, however, when Toby hands her a card from his father, and a message to say he will open a savings account for the baby. Her pleasure is not shared by Jill, unsurprisingly.
  • David tells Josh that they will need his help during lambing and calving. Josh protests that his business needs him, but David stands firm. Josh reluctantly agrees to do his bit, but makes it clear that his strengths lie elsewhere, especially where calving is concerned. David warns him not to take his complaints to Pip.
  • Over Jill’s latest cake, the Brookfield set discuss the Parish Council meeting. David admires Brian for facing the village in this way. Pip has more important things on her mind, and motherhood is not one of them. She wants to call in Russ from the dairy contractors to advise them on the new parlour. As she airily reminds her parents that they need to spend about £3K on this, discussion ensues. Ruth thinks that Pip’s pregnancy means they should step back from such large expenditure; Josh thinks the way forward is mega-herds, so they should be looking to milk a thousand head of cattle. David is appalled at the very prospect, but they agree to get Russ along to lay out the options. Toby drops in again to retrieve his tablet, but makes a quick exit when he picks up on a certain hostility from David.
  • Pip discovers Jill looking online at children’s savings accounts. Is she trying to outshine Robin Fairbrother? Certainly not, snaps Jill. But she is longing to look after a baby again…
  • Ruth coyly tells David that Toby was ‘quite sweet’ at the scan. Unmoved, David does admit that Neil told him how horrified he was when Emma and Ed finally got together, yet now Neil really admires Ed. Somehow David can’t envisage this where Toby is concerned. Ruth then tells David what she overheard Jill saying to Pip. We need to nip this in the bud, he declares. Pip needs to get real, and fast.
