Radio Times: Jill’s blood boils. Jolene shares her worries

Characters: , , , , ,
  • While Kirsty lends a hand with Jill’s bees, constructing new frames, Ruth appears and in her best caring voice tells the duo how much she admires their work at the pop-up café. Jill is furious that the café is having to find new premises while the Duckford sisters set up a very expensive restaurant in place of the café.
  • Bored without Justin’s company, Lilian calls at The Bull for a gin or two. She tells Jolene how generous Justin was, showering her with presents and how he was not at all put out by the revelation of her real age. Lilian happens to mention twice that Matt didn’t bother with either a card or a present, but he is ancient history now. Jolene seems a touch dubious. They discuss relationships, Harrison and Fallon’s in particular. Jolene can’t see why Fallon should mind being financially dependent on him, but Lilian points out that she was brought up by Jolene to regard herself as an equal in any relationship.
  • Lexi, the Bulgarian picker, has asked Kirsty if she can volunteer at the cafe, to help with her English. Jill has heard that Brian has already reserved a table for the opening night at the restaurant, and she intends to tell him what she thinks of that.
  • Brian calls at Brookfield to ask Ruth if she will hold power of attorney for Ruairidh. he flatters her outrageously, and at first Ruth seems to lap it up, but when Brian asks for her decision, it seems that Ruth just might have other ideas. As he leaves, Jill catches him and tells Brian exactly what she thinks of him supporting the new restaurant venture while so many are struggling to feed their families. She calls the Duckford sisters arrogant, pretentious and entitled; Brian informs her that he will eat what he likes, where he likes.
  • As a slightly befuddled Lilian returns to the Dower House, she tries to ring Justin to say how much she is missing him. Then she hears a dog bark and discovers a puppy awaiting her, plus a note: Happy Birthday, Pusscat. You didn’t really think I’d forget? Mmm… ancient history, is he?
