  • Pip insists on helping Ruth with a sick cow, saying she doesn’t need to be in college. Ruth is not convinced, and tries to turn the conversation to Pip’s college choices, but Pip brushes this aside, saying she has to get the dinner dance out of the way first.
  • Jolene seems to have reverted to zombie mode as she and Kenton head for the wholesaler, but she brightens up as he chats about music. They are both concerned at their lack of trade, and hope Christmas will be the turning point.
  • Pip, sounding all of ten years old, tells Ruth that Alan has asked her to play one of the carols for the Advent service, and that Valda is going to give her organ lessons in preparation. Ruth is touched to think that Pip will be taking Phil’s place.
  • Jazzer sneers at Harry for helping Mike out washing bottles, but admits that Harry’s question for their appearance as joint quiz masters will test the teams. Harry asks if Jazzer wants to share his tuna bake after work. Jazzer is almost speechless at the prospect, and says take-away pizza is more his style – but he can make porridge. Harry thinks he should give it a go; Jazzer will, before he goes out on the beer.
  • Jolene confides to Kenton that she feels strange eating lunch in a pub without Sid. But Kenton demonstrates the wind-up penguin he bought at the wholesalers, and Jolene’s spirits rise.
  • Harry returns to find that Jazzer has indeed been cooking, but has wrecked Harry’s new cast iron saucepan and chef’s knife in the process. Harry is furious, and tells Jazzer exactly what he thinks of him. Jazzer is largely unrepentant, but Harry insists he should make amends by doing a favour for someone else. For once Jazzer needs to think about someone else.
