Justin makes his feelings towards Lilian very clear.
Radio Times: Justin is not a happy man
Characters: Adam, DI Thorpe, Harrison, Jennifer, Justin, Lilian- Shopping in Borchester, it is apparent to all but Jennifer that Lilian has much on her mind. As Jennifer witters on mindlessly about weddings, Peggy’s birthday and Noluthando, Lilian makes her excuses and heads off alone.
- Adam reports to the police station where he is met by weak jokes about cricket from DI Thorpe. She reminds Adam that he is not there under arrest and is free to leave if he wishes. The interview will be recorded. It begins with a question about Adam’s exact relationship to Matt.
- Unable to face shopping, Lilian returns home and is overjoyed to find Justin there. her joy is short-lived, however, when Justin coldly informs her that he has business at Berrow Farm, and it was convenient for him to stay in his own house. Lilian quickly tells him that Matt has gone, but Justin is not interested in discussing the matter.
- DI Thorpe asks when Adam next saw Matt after the incident recorded on CCTV. Adam makes it clear that he had no contact with Matt, would definitely never have done business with him, and that he left the ball at 9 and went straight home. His departure was indeed caught on camera, but as no-one was home, who can corroborate his claim to have gone straight there? As Adam leaves, the DI tells Harrison she is fairly sure Adam was not involved, and that they need to speak to Justin. What will he make of his fiancee’s relationship with her ex? They ring him to set a date for an interview.
- Lilian insists that Justin hear the whole story. He is speechless when he hears that Hugo Melling was involved and very concerned that Latif has been a victim. This does little to help Lilian’s attempts to woo him back, however. Icily, Justin claims that his fiancee was sleeping with a criminal. Vainly Lilian tries to make Justin see the truth, but he is no mood to listen. He must ring Latif and his solicitor since Lilian insists on remaining in his house.
- Seemingly still in airhead mode, Jennifer meets Adam in Borchester and, disregarding his anxieties following the interview, airily dismisses Matt as being ‘nothing but trouble.’
